Walk through the city by the sea and discover enchanting The Hague on foot.

Why Walk in The Hague?

The Hague is unique: nowhere else in the Netherlands can you find a city that lies so close to the sea with such abundant greenery right on its doorstep like Haagse Bos or Landgoed Clingendael. During a walk you’ll go from grand avenues to lush parks, from historic courtyards to expansive dune landscapes. The city offers both tranquillity and vibrancy — ideal for an inspiring walk. Remember: you don’t have to follow the route exactly. If you spot a quirky alley or an interesting forest path, feel free to explore it and let yourself be charmed in true Hague style.

If you prefer a guided walking tour, you can find organised strolls with a guide here.

Great Places to Walk in The Hague

Whether you’re heading for the sea, wandering through dunes or finding peace in a city park, there is greenery (or blue sea!) close by.

Beach

With 11 kilometres of coastline, a walk along the beach is a must. You can go all the way from Kijkduin to the Zwarte Pad at Scheveningen. A small detour via the harbour is necessary, but this is a good opportunity to take a break. Enjoy fresh fish at Areia in the harbour or treat yourself to a cocktail at Caipi Café. And on the beach, you will find plenty of beach bars where you can relax. Perhaps you will even take a dip in the sea!

Dunes

Where there’s a beach, there are dunes! The Hague borders several dune areas that are part of the Hollands Duinen National Park. With a bit of luck, you may spot foxes or Scottish Highland cattle here, right in the most densely populated part of the Netherlands.

Parks and Forests

The city is surrounded by beautiful parks and forests, and you’ll find plenty of green spaces within the city itself too — from Haagse Bos and the Palace Garden behind Noordeinde Palace to the Scheveningen Woods and the expansive Zuiderpark. Other favourites include the classic Clingendael estate, known for its Japanese Garden, and Westbroekpark where you can also rent a boat. Wherever you are, greenery is never far away.
