In the 1950s, a surprisingly innovative and experimental art movement emerged in The Hague: the New Hague School. The painters and sculptors of the post–World War II era sought, above all, to be free. The artists associated with this movement, active between 1945 and 1975, refused to conform to the conventional and polished image often associated with The Hague art.

With this small-scale exhibition, organised in conjunction with the publication Nieuwe Haagse School – Bovenal vrij2025 (WBooks), the Kunstmuseum sheds new light on this dynamic and multifaceted period. A time in which the work of in particular women artists often remained in the shadows. With this exhibition, Kunstmuseum Den Haag offers them — and other artists of this era — a well-deserved platform..
