Alphabetum XV - Writing Systems of the Otherworld
6 Sep - 25 Jan 2026
Exhibition
In 2025, West Den Haag will present the project Alphabetum XV: Writing Systems from Another World, closely related to the site-specific work Afaka Kondee by Surinamese artist Marcel Pinas.
Writing Systems from Another World
This work, specially developed for the Open Pavilion, continues the reflection on the unique Afaka script. This remarkable writing system, which originated in the early 20th century and is rooted in Maroon culture, is a rare example of a script that developed outside the usual linguistic traditions.
Alphabetum XV explores writing systems that have emerged from dreams, visions and inexplicable sources of inspiration. Like Afaka, these are systems that bridge the gap between imagination and communication. The project is being developed in collaboration with international experts Tim Brookes (Endangered Alphabets) and Edgar Walthert, who share their knowledge, research and unique perspectives on the rich world of scripts and symbols.
The programme consists of a site-specific installation at West The Hague, two accompanying publications, and an international symposium on 26 October 2025. During this symposium, artists, scientists and researchers will discuss the aesthetics, philosophy and cultural significance of these extraordinary writing systems.
