A call for peace and a tribute to the innocent victims of the war in Ukraine. The Chamber Orchestra of the North plays Drop after Drop. It is an international ensemble with 20 young string players. They were so captivated by their inspired playing that they were invited to make their Hague debut. The high-profile composer and conductor Maxim Shalygin will conduct the ensemble in works by himself and his Ukrainian compatriots and kindred spirits Svyatoslav Lunyov and Valentin Silvestrov. Soprano Maryana Golovchencko sings connecting intermezzi between the various movements. A meditative and hushed programme in a lighting design by Nico de Rooij.

Catching Ukrainian new music under one heading is impossible. Composers are encouraged to find their own style and voice while training in Ukraine. Valentin Silvestrov writes dreamy music that seems to come from another dimension. Music with a signature all its own. His three-movement Stille Musik for strings is one of his finest works. The no less idiosyncratic Svyatoslav Lunyov makes time stand still in Tristium. Maxim Shalygin, who has lived and worked in The Hague for ten years, has created an international furore with his eloquent compositions, in which he does not hesitate to go to extremes. He conducts two tranquil works: Drop after Drop and Lullaby, an ode to life. With Satarsa, which exudes a Mahlerian grandeur, he pays homage to the Argentine writer Julio Cortázar.
