Echoes of Myanmar
13 Oct - 31 Oct
Exhibition
From October 13 until October 31 the exhibition Echoes of Myanmar can be seen in the Atrium City Hall.
Since 2017, nearly one million Rohingya have fled violence in Myanmar. They now live in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh: stateless, isolated, and often forgotten. With Echoes of Myanmar, Museum of Humanity brings their stories to life. Meet the people behind a forgotten crisis and discover their struggles, resilience, and culture.
The exhibition has been curated by Museum of Humanity in collaboration with IOM, Stichting Vluchteling, Hope Foundation, embassy of Bangladesh and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Large portrait banners from Museum of Humanity hang in the Atrium. They show the makers of objects from the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre and patients from the Hope Foundation. Together with video clips, display cases, informative panels, and personal stories, they create a powerful, moving experience. Echoes of Myanmar is a call to open our eyes to a forgotten crisis.
Art and crafts
In early 2025, Museum of Humanity visited the Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar, the largest refugee camp in the world. Here, IOM runs the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre: a creative, safe place where music, art, crafts, and memories contribute to identity and resilience. A selection of handmade objects is on display in the Atrium, bearing witness to hope, pride, and creativity. This is the first time they have been shown in the Netherlands.
Chronically ill
This exhibition shows more than just culture. Through intimate portraits and stories, you experience what it is like to live in this camp with a chronic illness. The Hope Foundation offers medical assistance to these patients; Stichting Vluchteling supports this work and is a partner of the exhibition.
VR experience
Unique is an impressive VR experience that allows visitors to take a virtual walk through the camp. Created by Stichting Vluchteling, this experience offers a poignant glimpse into the daily lives of refugees. The VR boat is only available at certain times. The VR boat can be experienced from Monday to Friday from 11AM to 6PM and on Thursdays until 9PM.
Museum of Humanity
Museum of Humanity in Zaandam uses portraits and stories to show that every human being is valuable—vulnerable, powerful, and human—and conveys this message through exhibitions and projects wherever awareness and connection are needed.
