Floris Arntzenius, painter and flâneur from The Hague
22 Nov - 14 Dec
Exhibition
Painter Floris Arntzenius (1864-1925) became famous for his recognisable street scenes of The Hague. In his characteristic style, he immortalised places such as Spuistraat, Korte Poten, Wagenstraat and Lange Voorhout. In both individual watercolours and oil paintings on canvas, he managed to capture not only the cityscape but also the lively atmosphere of The Hague.
An ode to a master from The Hague
The year 2025 marks exactly one hundred years since Arntzenius passed away. This special anniversary is the occasion for an intimate tribute to this influential painter of The Hague. As an active member of Pulchri Studio, where he served for some time as secretary of the board alongside chairman H W Mesdag, Arntzenius was at the heart of the Hague School.
His paintings, watercolours and drawings reveal a sure hand and a unique style that made him a successful and beloved artist during his lifetime.
From historic streets to Scheveningen and still lifes
The exhibition presents a carefully curated selection of works from private collections. In addition to the well-known cityscapes, there are also depictions of Scheveningen, still lifes and portraits. Each work shows how Arntzenius used light, colour and detail to capture an image of his time that still appeals today.
From generation to generation, a lasting influence
The organisers also emphasise the connection with the present in this exhibition. Arntzenius' unique painting style has inspired many artists. His daughter Lies Arntzenius, his pupil Herman Heuff and contemporary city painter Titus Meeuws show work in which his influence is still palpable.
