At Pasvik Folk High School, more than 200 miles above the Arctic Circle, young people choose to spend an unconventional gap year. No classrooms or telephones, but living in nature, caring for huskies and learning together how to survive in extreme conditions.
Directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady follow these teenagers at a turning point in their lives. What begins with uncertainty and resistance slowly grows into self-confidence, connectedness and personal growth. The vast landscapes of Northern Norway form the backdrop for an intimate story about growing up. The title Folktales refers to ancient Norse myths, in which fate is woven. In this film, you see how a new generation is shaping its own path. Away from expectations, close to themselves and nature.
Folktales is a warm and honest portrait of young people searching for direction in a world full of stimuli. A documentary that touches you, slows you down and makes you think about what is really important.
