Group exhibition – Kissed by the light
19 May - 31 May
The group exhibition Kissed by the Light brings together work by eight female photographers. At the Klinkenberg Gallery, light takes centre stage as a defining and meaningful element of photography.
What is ‘Kissed by the Light’?
The group exhibition Kissed by the Light features work by eight female photographers. The exhibition is being held in the rear gallery of the Klinkenberg Gallery and runs concurrently with a presentation by artist Lukas de Vrande in the front gallery.
Light plays a central role in the exhibition. Not only as a technical aspect of photography, but also as an element that gives the image its form, atmosphere and meaning.
About the exhibition
The exhibition arose from a long-held desire on the part of Esther Langendam to curate an exhibition featuring exclusively the work of female photographers. When a space became available at the Klinkenberg Gallery, that idea took shape.
Although photography is a diverse field, its public profile is still often dominated by male practitioners. At the same time, this picture is changing increasingly. Women are now well represented at art colleges and photography courses. Kissed by the Light reflects this trend and showcases a variety of photographic approaches.
The exhibition does not focus on any single style, but instead showcases a wide range of images and approaches. Craftsmanship, attention to detail and sensitivity form an important foundation for this.
What is there to see?
Following discussions with the participating photographers, curator Esther Langendam compiled a selection of works that engage with one another thematically. Light plays a key role throughout: at times revealing, at times softening, and at times confrontational.
The title Kissed by the Light refers to the very essence of photography: working with light to see, capture and interpret. The exhibition features portraits in colour and black and white, in which the use of light enhances the expressiveness of the image.
