Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag van Houten formed a special artist couple. Both left a rich collection. The presentation Highlights from the collection is composed with works from Museum Panorama Mesdag's own collection.

Hendrik Willem Mesdag had learned to draw from an early age, but did not receive his first painting lessons until 1866 during a three-year stay with his family in Brussels. The nearby Scheveningen beach was his favorite place to work. There Mesdag sketched the sea and fishermen's life in all weather conditions. As early as 1870 he gained international recognition for his work.

Sientje Mesdag-van Houten studied in Brussels with her husband. She painted still lifes, portraits and landscapes in the surroundings of Scheveningen, in Drenthe and on the Veluwe. She was one of the best known and most esteemed female artists of her time.

Special in this presentation is Sientje Mesdag-van Houten's new acquisition Schaapskooi at sunset. The painting was recently donated to the museum. The artwork illustrates the great color control with which the artist was successful at home and abroad. The acquisition can now be seen for the first time in the new collection presentation: Highlights from the collection.
