Jozef van der Horst - Everyone needs artificial light
19 May - 2 Jun
In the exhibition Everyone Needs ‘Art’ Light, artist Jozef van der Horst presents light installations in which light, space and perception come together. The exhibition is on display at Pulchri Studio’s Voorhout Gallery.
About Jozef van der Horst
Jozef van der Horst (The Hague, 1946) has been active in The Hague’s art scene for decades. His work spans sculpture, installation art and light art. In his practice, he explores light as an independent material that shapes space and influences perception.
His light installations are meticulously constructed. Clean lines, clear forms and the interplay of light and shadow result in works that are constantly transformed by light, space and movement.
What can you expect from ‘Everyone Needs ‘Artificial’ Light’?
The exhibition features light installations that respond to their surroundings, to natural light and to the visitor’s position. The light in the works is at times soft and enveloping, and at other times sharp and clearly defined.
Van der Horst works with hand-blown glass. He does not follow set patterns, but works on the basis of feeling and an intuitive sense of colour. As a result, every piece is unique and visibly linked to the moment of its creation.
He developed his approach over a period of more than fifty years. The works in this exhibition provide an overview of a long-standing and consistent practice in which thinking, making and looking are closely intertwined.
About the exhibition
The exhibition offers visitors the chance to discover light art that blends technology and poetry. The installations change with every step, inviting visitors to linger and take a closer look.
In addition to being a member of Pulchri Studio, Jozef van der Horst is represented by Galerie Mia Joosten. His work has previously been exhibited at events including KunstRAI and Art The Hague.
