Julia Wolfe’s Anthracite Fields
Classical music
In recent years, Julia Wolfe’s compositions have focused on the socioeconomic issues of her home country, the US. In Anthracite Fields, she examines the lives of coal miners.
Her brilliance lies in the use of series of repeating names and phrases to paint a complete picture: one of child labour, work accidents and poverty, but also of flowers in the gardens and communities that emerged around the mines. One thing is certain: this concert will not leave you unmoved.
