The starting point for the exhibition is the new publication Aardgordels/Terrestrial Belts.

Karin van Dam (1959) looks at her older work, in which she explored urban structures, from the perspective of her new work, which focuses on nature. She recently travelled with her Taiwanese/Canadian colleague Ed Pien to northern Canada, where she met First Nations people, hiked through glacier areas, half-charred forests and along the rugged banks of creeks. This resulted in “field notes”, which are displayed in a display case in the exhibition.

The exhibition connects old and new work spanning a period of approximately thirty years. With the transition to natural forms, she also began experimenting with wool and polyesters in the textile lab of the Textile Museum Tilburg. The exhibition includes large circular shapes inspired by lichens, knitted with wool and synthetic fibres, and a tower constructed from a kind of steel wool hats.

Combining old and recent work creates a new coherence and meaning in which the wonder and fragility of the earth becomes visible.

Opening

The exhibition will be opened on Sunday 7 September at 3.30 p.m. by Lucette ter Borg, who wrote the text for the publication Aardgordels/Terrestrial Belts. She will read a passage and talk to Karin van Dam about the work and the exhibition.
