A yellow stone with dark veins sits on a table.

At a time when photography often revolves around perfection, extreme sharpness and digital idealisation, Rik Linssen consciously chooses a different approach. For him, beauty lies in what already exists, here and now, when you look at things differently and take your time.

His work invites you to shift your attention downwards or upwards, close by or far away, in front of you or behind you. Not preoccupied with the everyday or with an imposed ideal image, but open to whatever presents itself. He finds inspiration in lines, waves, composition and, above all, in colour and the play of light. Both grand forms and small, unexpected gems catch his eye.

Most photographs are taken spontaneously. Walking, hiking, driving, eating, in the midst of life, a moment can suddenly light up. The smartphone makes it possible to capture that moment immediately, without disruption or delay. Often it is a fraction of a second, a snapshot that would be lost with a classic camera. When there is more time and space, Linssen also works with his system camera.

As a self-taught photographer, he started taking pictures at a young age. At fourteen, he got his hands on a black-and-white camera, followed by black-and-white prints, slides, colour negatives, and his work at Fuji Photo Film. The transition to digital expanded his possibilities but did not change the core of his working method. The photographs are edited as little as possible, because he wants to capture the moment as it happened. Cropping is almost always done, partly because each shot starts from a single fixed format. MOMENT is an ode to looking. To attention, slowing down and what becomes visible when you are truly present.
