Solidarity on Stage
28 May - 29 May
In collaboration with The Greater Middle East Platform, Branoul is organising two special benefit evenings in aid of the HOPE Foundation (Gaza) and the Tiro Association for Arts (Beirut). Over the course of two evenings, the work of writer Ahmed Masoud will be brought to life through theatrical readings, film, music and storytelling.
On 28 May, the theatrical reading of Application 39 offers a sharp, darkly comic take on an imagined Olympic future for Gaza.
Masoud’s futuristic play is set in Gaza in 2040. As an online prank, two young people submit a bid for the 2048 Summer Olympics in Gaza, only to see their idea grow into an unstoppable movement. A sharp, tragicomic exploration of desire, survival and the power of the imagination when reality becomes unliveable. Starring: Rafi Feghali, Emad Ballan
On 29 May, the staged reading of The Shroud Maker offers a powerful and intimate portrait of resilience and survival. In this black comedy, Masoud follows 80-year-old Hajja Souad, who has been earning a living for decades in besieged Gaza by making shrouds for the dead. The play is loosely based on a real person and weaves together satire, fantasy and eyewitness accounts into a poignant portrait of Palestinian life under occupation, where gallows humour becomes a means of survival. Flora Kenza Nacer reads excerpts from the book, accompanied by live music from Mehmet Polat.
Both evenings will feature a film, an interview and a relaxed café atmosphere with snacks and conversation.
Each evening stands on its own, but together they offer an in-depth, multifaceted experience.
Together, they hope to raise meaningful support for two essential cultural initiatives:
- HOPE Foundation (Gaza): provides safe and creative spaces for children and young people
- Tiro Association for Arts (Beirut): manages the National Theatre of Lebanon and offers artistic programmes and accommodation to displaced families.
Join us for one or both evenings filled with stories, reflection and connection.
Tickets are available from €24.50, and as this is a charity event, any additional contribution is welcome; all proceeds will go to the initiatives mentioned above.
