The Hague, City by the Sea, offers the best of both worlds. Within 15 minutes, you can go from the lively city centre to having your feet in the sand at Scheveningen. That’s what makes The Hague unique. Enjoy a lovely lunch in the city centre, then stroll along Scheveningen’s refurbished promenade. Sand between your toes and new shoes on your feet. In The Hague, you don’t have to choose, because in the city by the sea, you experience more
Scheveningen: the perfect seaside resort for a day at the beach
For two hundred years, Scheveningen has been a place to get away from it all together. By the sea, with space to play, get some fresh air and recharge your batteries with the whole family. With the renovated promenade, that’s now even easier and more relaxing.
Between De Pier and Museum Beelden aan Zee, the promenade is now over ten metres wider and greener. More space for walking, sitting and socialising. In front of the Kurhaus is a new square, with atmospheric lighting and space for both small-scale and large events.
A 30-metre-wide staircase and new access ramps now take you comfortably down to the beach in one go. Perfect for buggies, beach gear and children who can’t wait to run into the sand. Over the weekend of 18 and 19 April, the refurbished promenade will be officially opened to the public during KidsFest at Sea.

Which beach of The Hague is the spot for me?
The Hague is lucky enough to have 11 kilometres of coastline right on its doorstep. From lively Scheveningen to tranquil Zuiderstrand: every stretch of coastline has its own unique atmosphere. Are you looking for lively beach clubs, a leisurely stroll along the beach, or a peaceful spot in nature?
Shopping in the city centre
Each part of The Hague’s city centre has its own unique atmosphere, but together they make for a lovely spot for a relaxing day out with the family. Shops, restaurants and cultural attractions are all close together, so you can easily stroll from a shopping street to a museum in the Museum Quarter or a terrace in the sun.
- For unique local shops, head to the historic Hofkwartier, the regal Noordeinde and Denneweg.
- Be sure to take a stroll through De Passage, the oldest covered shopping arcade in the Netherlands: atmospheric, sheltered and very photogenic.
- Fancy picking up some well-known brands? Then head to Spuistraat, Venestraat, Vlamingstraat, Wagenstraat and Grote Markstraat.
This makes a day out in the city centre a relaxing mix of shopping, exploring and enjoying yourself together! Be sure to mark the Whitsun weekend (23–25 May) in your diary for SummerFest, the most enjoyable weekend to visit The Hague city centre.

One of The Hague’s most popular coastal towns: Kijkduin
Kijkduin feels like a quiet family seaside resort where it’s easy to find your way around. It’s small-scale, easy to navigate and right by the sea. The refurbished promenade is more spacious and greener, with plenty of room to walk, play and relax whilst enjoying the sea view. Around the Daily Taste food court, you’ll discover lovely restaurants and shops. Everything is close together, so you can easily switch between the beach, a snack and some playtime. The whole month of May is dedicated to KijkduinFest with fun activities for the whole family every weekend!

How to get to the beach?
On sunny days, the roads to the beach can get busy. Being prepared helps you avoid traffic jams, so check vanAnaarZee.nl before you set off. There you’ll find, among other things, ‘Van A naar Zee-live’ – a map with up-to-date travel information. This lets you see straight away what the best route is for you and where there’s still space to park or leave your bike.
