Thanks to his idiosyncratic visual language, full of references to history, mythology and literature, Anselm Kiefer (1945) became one of the greatest artists of our time. In four decades, he has built an oeuvre of grand proportions with paintings, vitrines, installations, artists’ books and works on paper, such as collages and edited photographs. He is best known for his iconic paintings. At Voorlinden, he gets all the space he needs to showcase the breadth of his oeuvre and techniques used, both in the museum and on the estate.

Kiefer's life began the moment World War II ended. This historical tipping point is the thread running through his life. He was one of the first German artists to scrutinise recent history in the late 1960s. Yet his work transcends this theme: above all, he is fascinated by time and the continuity of history. Using oil paint, earth, lead, photography, woodcuts, sand, hay and other natural materials, Kiefer interweaves complex historical events, Germanic mythology, alchemy and poetry into works that appeal to our collective memory.

Please note: Anselm Kiefer's exhibition is large and expensive. Therefore, a surcharge of €2.50 on all regular admission prices applies during the exhibition period, except for children under 12.
