Becoming Mondriaan
How much do you really know about Piet Mondriaan?
The letters offer a unique glimpse behind the scenes of one of the Netherlands’ best-known artists. Witty, perceptive and at times moving, they reveal a side of Mondrian that his famous paintings do not show. Visitors can read about a nineteen-year-old artist asking the Queen Regent for a scholarship, a painter struggling to pay his rent, and a man who reflected deeply on loneliness, friendship and the meaning of art.
Becoming Mondrian paints an intimate portrait of Piet Mondrian before his international breakthrough, before *De Stijl* and before his name became world-famous. The result is an impressive combination of art, history and live music that takes visitors behind the scenes of the artist’s life.
About the performers
The New Amsterdam Trio consists of three dedicated musicians with diverse backgrounds in classical music, jazz, world music and contemporary classical music. Together, they create concerts that effortlessly transcend genre boundaries. A performance by the trio might include songs by Schubert and Bernstein, freely improvised music inspired by both old and modern jazz and classical traditions, and American folk songs. All this music is performed with a high degree of virtuosity and an uncompromising focus on the audience’s acoustic experience.
