What are the consequences of raw material extraction for local communities, the climate and human rights? At the second Critical Matters meeting, scientists and experts will examine the impact of global demand for raw materials in Africa and Latin America.

What are the consequences of raw material extraction?

Oil, cobalt and lithium are raw materials that are extracted all over the world. But what does this extraction mean for the people living in these areas? The second Critical Matters meeting will focus on the impact of raw material extraction on regional and local communities.

In collaboration with scientists and experts, the similarities between Africa and Latin America are being examined. How is global demand for raw materials changing the geopolitical balance of power? What are the consequences for the climate? And what role do human rights play?

Scientists and experts have their say

During this event, three speakers will share their knowledge and insights:

  • Jeleel Balyaminu, MSc – PhD student at Leiden University. He is researching mining regulations in Africa.
  • Dr Soledad Valdivia Rivera – Researcher at Leiden University and an expert on Bolivia and Latin America.
  • Jacqueline Persson – Climate expert at Oxfam Novib.
