Artoteek 1972
The Haagse Artoteek, as Heden was then called, opened its doors in 1972 at 14 Denneweg. Residents of The Hague and the surrounding area could rent a work of art here for a soft price. This not only made art more accessible to a wide audience, but also provided a new place for artists to display their own work. This double added value for the artistic climate in The Hague runs like a thread through more than half a century of Heden. An impressive number of exhibitions, art acquisitions, artist awards and artistic projects at home and abroad have shaped the character of Heden over the years.
Denneweg 14 in wartime
DENNEWEG 14 gives special attention to the residents who were in hiding here during World War II. During a renovation in 2022, property owner Jaap Sleper discovered old documents behind a front wall. These turned out to be an appeal to Jewish Herbert Meijer for employment in Germany, a travel permit and ticket from Maliebaan station in Utrecht to camp Westerbork. Meijer never made the trip; together with his brother, he went into hiding in the building on the Denneweg.
During a search of the house on 6 May 1943, Meijer managed to escape via a skylight, thus escaping a dark fate. He probably had to watch as his mother-in-law and brother Ernst Ludwig Hugo Meijer were taken away. Ernst Meijer was murdered almost immediately on arrival at Sobibor extermination camp on 21 May 1943. On 9 April 2025, a tripstone (Stolperstein) in memory of Ernst Meijer will be placed in front of the Denneweg 14 building.
