Esther Langendam - Provenance
2 Apr - 4 Jun
Exhibition
In the photo series Provenance, Esther Langendam examines the origin and value of craft clothing from the interwar period (1920-1930). Her portraits show young people who not only dress in historic clothes, but also wear them with care in everyday life. In doing so, they show their love for craftsmanship, high-quality fabrics and sustainability principles that are becoming increasingly rare in today's fashion industry.
The models, members of Club Interbellum, scour markets and the internet for authentic garments made of wool, silk and cotton-with handmade and once intended to last for generations. Their choice of style transcends nostalgia: it is a conscious reassessment of craft and a contrast to today's throwaway culture.
Langendam places these timeless silhouettes in a modern designed environment, creating a dialogue between past and present. The interplay of classic clothing and contemporary design raises questions about the cyclical nature of fashion and the enduring relevance of craftsmanship. Provenance shows how history and contemporary aesthetics merge effortlessly-an ode to the enduring power of style and authenticity.
