Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), navolger, Man in oriëntaalse kleding, na 1632, Kyiv, Khanenko Museum

Starting 21 June, Museum Bredius in The Hague presents a unique international exhibition: Old Masters from Kyiv in The Hague. Fourteen masterpieces from the Khanenko Museum in Kyiv are shown alongside twelve highlights from the Bredius collection. Portraits, still lifes, landscapes and historical scenes are exhibited together for the first time, revealing the artistic dialogue between Ukraine and the Netherlands — just as art historian Abraham Bredius experienced during his 1897 journey through Eastern Europe.

This special exhibition not only reflects the shared passion of collectors Bredius and the Khanenkos, but also brings artworks from a war-affected collection to the City of Peace and Justice. A powerful presentation of European heritage, cultural connection and visual richness.

Highlights exhibition

  • Masterpieces from Kyiv & The Hague: 14 paintings from the Khanenko Museum displayed alongside 12 works from the Bredius collection.
  • Striking use of colour: from rich tones to refined light effects – “beautiful in colour,” as Bredius noted in his 1897 travel journal.
  • Rustic humour in paint: playful peasants, kissing couples, and dancing figures animate the scenes with wit and character.
  • Historic travel documented: Bredius viewed many of these works in Kyiv during his 1897 Eastern European tour – his original notebooks are on display.
  • Unique pairings: still lifes, portraits and history paintings from Ukraine and the Netherlands presented in conversation with one another.
  • Art from a war zone: these works were safely relocated from Kyiv; many other pieces Bredius saw are still missing after WWII.
  • Stories of connection: a cultural exchange between two great collections, shown in The Hague – the city of peace, justice, and art.
