Tom Claassen

Sculptor Tom Claassen (1968) searches for the essence of form in his sculptures. By showing the archetypal characteristics of people, animals and objects, he provides just enough tools to be able to recognize the representation. Their often large formats ensure that you cannot miss them as a viewer. They often have round, soft shapes and are often made of hard materials such as bronze, wood, aluminium, plastic and concrete. In addition to being humorous, the images are often endearing, clumsy and sometimes tragic.
Large sculptures
Tom Claassen is best known for his works placed in public spaces, such as the elephants along the motorway, the seated men at Schiphol Airport and his sculpture Mikkel at festival Lowlands.
The large format of the works make them impossible to miss as a viewer. They often have round, soft shapes and are mostly executed in hard materials such as bronze, wood, aluminium, plastic and concrete. Claassen constantly plays with sculptural concepts such as space, scale, perspective and volume. With minimal features, the form gains maximum effect and stimulates the imagination. They balance on the border of figuration and abstraction, of appearing and disappearing.
