Autumn in The Hague - the best places and tips for this season

What to do in The Hague in autumn?

Autumn gives The Hague a unique charm. The trees turn red, orange and gold, and sometimes a warm late-summer sun still shines. Perfect for a long walk outdoors, but also for enjoying new exhibitions and performances indoors. Discover the best autumn tips in The Hague.

Autumn walk at Ockenburgh Country Estate

Walking at Ockenburgh is always a pleasure, but in autumn you stroll past blooming heath and crisp leaves, forgetting you’re still in the city. End your walk with something tasty at Villa Ockenburgh.

Spotting mushrooms at Clingendael Park

Clingendael is the perfect spot for an autumn walk. The colours of the trees are beautiful, and you’ll find many different mushrooms – even the classic red-and-white ones. Don’t miss the Japanese Garden, open only a few weeks in autumn.

Hiking in the dunes

Meijendel is the largest continuous dune area in South Holland. Walk or cycle through the dunes, visit the De Tapuit visitor centre, and finish with pancakes or a stop at the large playground. A perfect family outing.

Near the visitor centre is a large playground and a pancake farm where you can take the whole family.

Fresh air at The Hague’s beaches

With over 11 kilometres of coastline, The Hague is a true beach city – even in autumn. After a refreshing walk, warm up at one of the beach cafés that remain open year-round. Hot chocolate has never tasted better than after 'uitwaaien' at a breezy day by the sea.

Autumn activities & excursions

The Hague is surprisingly versatile in autumn:

  • Hofjes walk: discover hidden courtyards with a local guide.
  • Free walking routes: choose a themed walk and explore at your own pace.
  • Boat trip: if the weather is good, you can still enjoy a canal cruise in October.
  • Cycling routes: breathe in the crisp air and explore both city and nature by bike with one of the free cycle routes.

Shopping & terraces in autumn

After a walk, it’s time to enjoy a cosy terrace in a hidden courtyard garden or shop for something special. The city centre and neighbourhoods like the Zeeheldenkwartier & 'De Fred" are full of boutiques, cafés and hidden gems. Read more about shopping.
