Step into the world of Escher. That is literally possible in Escher – Other world in Kunstmuseum Den Haag. In this exhibition you will experience Escher's work like never before. His famous prints, in which optical illusions, impossible architecture, reflection and nature are central, are combined here with spectacular installations by the Belgian artist duo Gijs Van Vaerenbergh. The interaction between Escher's prints and the spatial installations of Gijs Van Vaerenbergh creates both a unique experience and a deepening of Escher's work.

Escher's prints are the result of an unprecedented talent, but also of an almost obsessive dedication to the graphic profession. His oeuvre, like that of the Gijs Van Vaerenbergh duo, is an exploration of the boundaries of space, landscape, perspective and illusion. Where Escher does this on paper, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh does this on the basis of spatial installations. For this exhibition, in which a cross-section of the oeuvre of M.C. Escher is central, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh devised space-filling interventions that look at Escher's work from a contemporary perspective. The interventions consist of sculptural associations with, among other things, lightness and heaviness, temporality and eternity, impossible architecture and infinity; themes that are also central to Escher's work.

For the layout of this double exhibition, the duo opted for the contrast of day and night, beloved by Escher. The first part of the exhibition, titled 'DAG', takes place in large, bright rooms that are thematically divided, in which the work of Escher and the spatial installations of Gijs Van Vaerenbergh challenge and reinforce each other. In the second part of the exhibition, called 'NIGHT', quirky themes are highlighted in cabinets, like small lights in the dark. This unique interaction sheds new light on the beloved and versatile artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, who is still a source of inspiration worldwide 125 years after his birth.

Gijs Van Vaerenbergh
The striking work of the Gijs Van Vaerenbergh duo lies at the intersection of art and architecture. Arnout Van Vaerenbergh and Pieterjan Gijs (both Leuven, 1983) found each other during their Architecture studies at KU Leuven in their search for a new experience of space. Gijs Van Vaerenbergh's idiosyncratic works of art are in constant motion and change per point of view. For example, what appears to be a recognizable construction from afar, such as a church, windmill or maze, appears close up to consist of all kinds of small elements, thus stripping itself of a permanent form. In this way, the duo plays with the eye of the spectator and his experience of the environment.
