Travelling on paper
Organised for the second time: Ben Rikken, Ton van Steenbergen, Bert Welmers, Jan van Spronsen, Remco de Waard, Michiel Scheepers, Hans Versfelt, Elena Lovich, Gineke Zikken and Maarten Welbergen, the exhibition Reizen op papier.
Sketching, drawing and watercolouring while travelling or from a place of residence is done by many artists, but rarely comes into the limelight. They are, as it were, the painter/draughtsman's finger and viewing exercises and often intended as a study of observation or souvenirs of a trip. Much art is conceived and executed in the studio. However, these (often) en-plein-air works arise spontaneously on the spot without much pretence. These direct observations often expose the soul of the creator, because it has not been thought about very long. Being executed on paper using chalk, ink, watercolour or pencil, among others, also makes these works lighter in execution and more playful in expression!
