Justice & Peace

The more people live together, the more rules are needed. From the schoolyard to the city, rules apply everywhere. A country has thousands of laws and regulations. Rules apply between countries. Sometimes rules are difficult, but where no rules apply, arbitrariness prevails. Without law it is the strongest or most powerful who tells what is allowed and what is not allowed, who determines who will be punished and how severe that punishment is. Without law there is injustice, without law there is quarrel. There is no peace without law.
Sometimes people don't get along when they argue. They then go to court. Countries in conflict can do the same. They come to the Peace Palace in The Hague and ask the international judges for a verdict. Take a seat in the stands and take on the role of the judge. What punishment should he give? Get to know The Hague as an international city of justice and peace. What does coffee have to do with law? A pipe or a tiger's tooth? How old are the first laws? Whose is the sea? Or the moon? You will discover it in the exhibition hall Recht en Vrede.
