A group of folkloric figures, expelled from modern Nordic normativity, hang around the exhibition. All are drawn to the entrance of a club, waiting for us to leave so they can come to life. This is their safe space, a space without us. This is their safe space where people can't go, a space without us. A space without us.

These mythological creatures, with bodies that bring natural materials to life, wear specially made clothing that expresses their personalities, as modern-day embodiments of their ancient, actual legends.

These figures are creatures from the past, placed in a contemporary context. Not unlike ourselves, yet completely different. Take, for example, the powerful Earth God and a single mother of four magical oxen, who takes hallucinogens once a year to relieve the pressure of parenthood. Or a wood elf who's tired of having to cover the hole in her back just because the human men keep staring at it...

The cultural past is often hijacked by right-wing conservatives as an attempt to distort history to fit their patriarchal, misogynistic, homophobic, cis-oriented worldview. Myrup resists this suffocating grip and rereads the sources of the past, bringing out their sensual, queer and progressive characters.

These characters emerge from oral narratives and emerge from a collective subconscious, and they represent a wilderness in reality as well as in thought. Myrup strives to rediscover these constantly changing stories and thereby gain a deeper understanding of our own current times.

The new works in the exhibition Salon des Refusés by Danish artist Rasmus Myrup are a co-production between the 1646 Gothenburg Biennale and the exhibition is in collaboration with Le Criée, in Rennes, France.
