Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895 – 1972): he was considered le maître among the couturiers. “If haute couture is an orchestra, Balenciaga is the conductor and the rest of us are just musicians following the master's directions,” Christian Dior once said.

In the autumn of 2022, Kunstmuseum Den Haag will pay tribute to his oeuvre in this color with the fashion exhibition Balenciaga – Meesterlijk Zwart. It is the first time that such a large selection of Balenciaga's works can be seen in the Netherlands. Whether opaque, transparent, matte or glossy, the couturier played an enchanting game with black. The play of light on Balenciaga's black creates a brilliant fabric expression, further emphasizing the line of his sculptural designs. Black in lace, embroidery, velvet, draped silk, fringes or glittering sequins… Each piece of couture is magnificently executed.

More than 100 masterpieces from the Palais Galliera and Maison Balenciaga depots will steal the show from September 24, 2022 to March 5, 2023 in Balenciaga – Masterly Black.

This exhibition is in collaboration with Palais Galliera and Paris Musées.
