Maria Neefjes was born in Noordwijk aan Zee to a teacher's family with ample interest in music and literature. Not only Maria but also elder sister Margriet de Moor (writer) and brother Joep Neefjes (founder of LPI, Leadwicks Press Images) chose a life as an artist. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.

For Maria, music was always essential and after the academy, she married composer Otto Ketting with whom she lived for 10 years. During those intense years devoted to music, daughter Sophie was born.

She met her current husband Rob van Hagen in Cairo. Apart from so many other things, they also share their great love for distant travel.

Since 1980, she has worked as an independent visual artist in The Hague. She often had to change studios. Her first studio on the Dunne Bierkade was converted into a luxury home. She rented a studio on Frederik Hendrikplein but the property was sold. She had to give up the huge space in the former Haagse Hopjesfabriek (15m. x 33m.) because that entire neighbourhood was being demolished. Then came fruitful years in her studio in the attic of the Spanjaardshof on Westeinde and then until today she paints in the quiet studio in the courtyard of her house on Huijgenspark.

Visual Archive:
Everything Maria experiences, sees, dreams, everything, even gestures and music, comes stored in her visual archive. From this visual archive, the artworks emerge.

She always travelled a lot; through familiar Europe, through Asia (with a great love for Indonesia), Mexico, Australia, the US, South Africa, etc. Impressions of these travels are reflected in the paintings. Besides her free work, tempera/oil paintings on linen, gouaches and graphics, she likes to work on commission.

Apart from the Netherlands, Maria Neefjes has exhibited in Europe (France, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Portugal), Asia (Tokyo, Hong Kong) and the US.(Boston, Maine). Her work is spread all over the world and included in collections of Companies, Banks and Museums.
