In 2023 it will be 125 years since Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was born. Escher's success is celebrated, which would not have been possible without his teacher and good friend Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita (1868-1944). From this spring, the poignant works of De Mesquita will hang side by side with the work of his most famous pupil in Escher in Het Paleis.

De Mesquita was not only a great artist and graphic artist, but also a teacher of graphic techniques. In that role he first meets the searching young man at the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. Encouraged by his parents, Escher initially opts for a specialization in architecture, but soon returns to this as soon as De Mesquita sees his early work. De Mesquita convinces Escher to switch to graphics. The two artists develop an artistic and personal bond for life.

The discoverer of Maurits Cornelis Escher: that is how Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita is known. This talented artist and graphic artist also taught graphic techniques at the School of Architecture and Decorative Arts. When Escher starts studying architecture there, De Mesquita gets to see his graphic work. He is so impressed by this that he convinces Escher to switch to his field.

Escher then develops into a masterful graphic artist and the two form an artistic and personal bond for life. Their artistic preferences are partly the same, but De Mesquita has a very own signature. In his depiction of people and animals, he leaves out everything that is not essential and presents his subjects with a number of strong lines. In other performances he is somewhat freer; these works originate from fantasy and are often humorous, but sometimes also threatening in nature.

Even after the death of De Mesquita in Auschwitz in 1944, Escher honors his teacher and friend. In this exhibition, the poignant graphics of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita hang side by side with the work of his most famous student.
