The perfect day out in The Hague with kids: from beach to city

How nice—you’ve planned a day in The Hague! Great idea, because the city has everything you need for a varied day out: a breath of fresh air at the beach, exploring museums, and plenty of spots in between where you can relax (or let the kids run wild). In these 24 hours, you’ll combine city and seaside for an unforgettable day that perfectly balances hustle and relaxation—and these tips are secretly just as fun for parents!

“Miles of boulevard. Perfect for scootering, walking, cycling, and skating. Where else can you find that?”

Morning in Scheveningen with kids

Playing in Scheveningen

Starting your day at the beach with a smoothie breakfast at Hart Beach of Aloha is always a good idea. After that, kids can burn off energy right away: building sandcastles, running along the shoreline, or playing at one of the beach playgrounds. Or try to spot as many fairy tales as you can at the Sprookjesbeelden aan Zee (Fairy Tale Sculptures by the Sea).

Looking for something more active? There are several surf schools where older kids can take a lesson. Prefer to stay dry? Then LEGOLAND Discovery Centre  is a safe bet, especially with younger children.

Things to experience in Scheveningen

SEA LIFE is a classic that never disappoints. Not too big, but just right for an hour of spotting sharks, rays, and seahorses. At Muzee, you can learn even more about the sea. And Madurodam has been a must-visit attraction for families for years. Or enjoy a show together at Kooman’s Puppet Theatre.

For teenagers, something more active might be fun, such as ziplining or a game of glow golf.

Eating in Scheveningen

After a morning outdoors, it’s time to grab a bite. Along the boulevard, you’ll find plenty of places that are easy and welcoming for families. Think beach clubs where you can sit back and relax, often with space for kids to play.

Pancakes are always a hit—especially the ones at The Shore—but a simple lunch with toasted sandwiches or burgers is just as easy to find. And at Foodhall Scheveningen, even the pickiest eater will find something they like!

Afternoon in The Hague city centre with kids

Playing in the city centre

In the city centre, it’s nice to alternate between walking and short breaks. Go on a “Robin Hood adventure” in the Haagse Bos (The Hague Forest), or play and have a picnic in the Palace Garden—the King’s garden behind Noordeinde Palace—perfect for a relaxing pause.

Or simply grab an ice cream and wander through the shopping streets—sometimes that’s all you need.

Things to experience in the city centre

Museums really make the difference here. The Children’s Book Museum is always a hit: interactive, educational, and above all fun. Escher in The Palace also works surprisingly well with (older) children.

For a short stop, the Passage is a lovely place to stroll through—covered and just a bit different from your typical shopping street.

Eating in the city centre

In the centre, you’ll find plenty of options—from quick bites to leisurely lunches. For families, places where you don’t have to wait too long are often the most convenient.

Think of family-friendly restaurants or spots where you can sit outside when the weather allows, such as the Plein, the Grote Markt , or one of the city’s hidden courtyard gardens.

Whether you’re grabbing an ice cream or visiting a fun museum, the city centre of The Hague offers something for everyone!

Late afternoon and evening in Kijkduin with kids

Playing in Kijkduin

Kijkduin is quieter than Scheveningen, and you’ll notice it right away. The beach is easy to navigate and ideal for families with younger children. Here, they can play freely without the crowds of the busy boulevard.

Climb on the boat-shaped playground on the promenade, take a ride on the carousel, or help “Uncle Jan” beachcombing along the shore.

Things to experience in Kijkduin

There are no big attractions here—and that’s exactly what makes it so enjoyable. A walk through the Westduinpark, where you might spot Scottish Highland cattle, or along the beach is always a good idea. Or watch the kitesurfers at the Zandmotor.

Still got energy left? Go kite flying or simply run around in the sand.

Eating in Kijkduin

End the day with a view of the sea. Restaurants in Kijkduin, such as Na Brasa are often less busier than in Scheveningen—perfect for lingering a little longer as the sun sets and the kids slowly wind down. For kids who still have energy to spare, restaurant Pex is a great choice: they can play in the playground while you unwind with a drink.

Prefer to do it the other way around? Here’s what your day could look like

Would you rather start in the city? That works just as well. Begin your day in the city centre with a relaxed breakfast and a museum visit. Then head to Kijkduin for a laid-back afternoon at the beach, where kids have plenty of space to play.

End your day in Scheveningen. In the evening, the boulevard comes alive, making it the perfect time for a stroll along the Pier or a seaside dinner with a view.

Morning → City centre (breakfast + museum)
Afternoon → Kijkduin (quieter beach, playtime)
Evening → Scheveningen (dinner + boulevard)

Also fun (around The Hague)

For sporty kids: go ice skating or snowboarding, or try one of the many active experiences at de Uithof. Burn off energy at Monkeytown, or marvel at beautiful butterflies at Vlinders aan de Vliet. Museum Voorlinden is also a hit with children, thanks to its many interactive and immersive experiences.

However you spend your time in The Hague, one thing’s for sure—it’s always fun!
