As a matter of course, when you think of Lucebert, the words poet and painter come to mind first. That he also photographed fanatically for a period is less well known. In the early 1950s, he bought a camera with the idea of capturing his young children. However, he became captivated by the medium and broadened his view to the world around him. People are central to his work, from his immediate loved ones to passers-by on the street. Unlike many photographers of his time who used photography to represent reality, Lucebert uses the medium in a completely unbound and intuitive way. The result is a unique body of work, full of poetic and evocative images.

Lucebert's period of photography is short, ending in 1966. He experiences photography as enormously strenuous and exhausting. Eventually, he sees himself more as a painter and poet.

Photos by Lucebert are in the museum's collection. In honour of the 100th birth anniversary of this versatile artist in 2024, Photomuseum The Hague is organising an intimate exhibition highlighting Lucebert's photography.
