A programme around Berio's Folk Songs and Schubert, featuring works by David Lang, Louis Andriessen, Amarante Nat, Franz Schubert and Luciano Berio, performed by Tim Brackman, Inga Våga Gaustad, Elisa Karen Tavenier, Pieter de Koe, Doriene Marselje, Rik Kuppen, Konstantyn Napolov, Agostinho Sequeira, Jelmer de Moed, Eva-Nina Kozmus, Elisabeth Hetherington.

Nineteen festival musicians descend on the Palace Church for the Festival Kindred. Classical NOW! gave Jelmer de Moed carte blanche to put together his dream programme. He is a clarinettist and initiator of multidisciplinary music theatre with Studio de Moed. In Kindred spirits, he presents compositions in a wide range of line-ups, from solo to full-stage. A time travel through several centuries, from Vivaldi to brand new premiere pieces.

Melodies from around the world tell stories of love, freedom, loss and hope in the final concert. David Lang expresses his dream of being able to fly in ‘These Broken Wings’. That yearning for freedom also echoes in ‘A Freedom's Lament’ by Amarante Nat.

With ‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen’, Franz Schubert composed a grandiose ballad about a mountain shepherd. This virtuoso piece for soprano and piano is heard in combination with Schubert's ‘Quartettsatz’. Schubert was a great source of inspiration for Luciano Berio. With Schubert in mind, he composed ‘Folk Songs’, a 20th-century classic with folk songs from all corners of the world. In this cycle - heard in the full ensemble version - the beloved soprano Elisabeth Hetherington gets a starring role. She recently won the Dutch Music Prize.

A programme full of kindred spirits. When Berio wrote his ‘Folk Songs’, he was teaching composition in Berlin, with Louis Andriessen in his class. The latter, as a teacher, then passed the baton to David Lang, who in turn inspired Amarante Nat. Percussionist Konstantyn Napolov plays Louis Andriessen's brilliant percussion solo ‘Woodpecker’.
