Julie de Graag
Julie de Graag is one of Escher's talented contemporaries. In 2024 it will be 100 years since she died. She shares her love for nature with M.C. Escher. She manages to capture the essence with few details in woodcuts of plants, animals and portraits. In this exhibition her work hangs side by side with that of Escher.
With her stylised work, Julie de Graag (1877-1924) makes small subjects such as animals, landscapes, flowers and plants grand. At a time when she had already far developed her own style, M.C. Escher was only at the beginning of his career. The exhibition of prints and drawings from the collection of Kunstmuseum Den Haag will really be a discovery for the general public.
Unlike Escher, who became a world-famous artist, Julie de Graag is mainly known to connoisseurs. Despite the beauty and depth of her graphic work, and the presence of her work in important Dutch art collections, she has so far received little attention. Escher in Het Paleis researched her life and work, which depicts rich nature and the essence of life, shedding new light on her oeuvre and that of Escher.
