For the inhabitants of places on earth without a connection to the electricity grid, solar energy can make a huge difference. Rubén Salgado Escudero shows this in this National Geographic photo exhibition Solar Portraits.

In all places where he shoots, he asks the same question, not as a journalist but as an artist: how has solar energy changed your life? He records the answer in almost magical-realistic images with solar panels, power wires and LED lamps in unexpected places as recurring elements. This photo project shows our dependence on electricity and the impact of our energy use on the earth.

The first images shot by Rubén Salgado Escudero in 2014, in Myanmar. Since then, he has traveled all over the world to portray people who do not have electricity and for whom portable solar cells offer a solution when darkness falls. Thanks to this lighting, they can continue to work or study and thus improve their income or future prospects.
